The Saybrook Township Park (STP) Board of Commissioners is pleased to update the community, especially the Saybrook residents, on the very generous donation made to the Lakefront Park, located at 5941 Lake Road West. The Robert S. Morrison Foundation has awarded STP a $40,000 grant for the installation of a pickleball court. This is the largest grant STP has ever received, and we extend our sincerest appreciation for this civic-minded gift. Project work will begin as scheduling allows, and additional funding opportunities for fencing around the court are being explored. The Board extends a sincere thank you once again to the Robert S. Morrison Foundation.
We would also like to acknowledge a private donation of $20,000 to STP Lakefront Park for playground updates, provided by a local business owner. Upon delivery of parts and supplies, the installation is expected to be completed by the end of summer. This generous contribution is deeply appreciated.
STP encompasses Lakefront Park, Big Oak Nature Park (located along Route 45 near North Bend Road), and Truesdell Memorial Park (at the corner of Route 45 and Route 20). Improvements have recently been made to Big Oak to enhance accessibility, and credit is due to Ohio Heritage Farm for their assistance with these upgrades.
Unfortunately, the Big Oak Nature Park location has previously experienced vandalism, including ATV use and unauthorized hunting. Please note: Big Oak Nature Park is not approved for hunting or ATV use. The Board is currently evaluating the addition of security cameras and hard stops to help prevent future damage. Thank you for helping to preserve Big Oak for the enjoyment of all.
Looking ahead, consideration is being given to how to make Truesdell Memorial Park more usable for residents. Potential improvements may include electricity and park benches, and funding is being actively pursued for these upgrades.
It is important to clarify that STP operates independently of Saybrook Township—STP is a separate entity with separate financials. STP is managed by three volunteer commissioners: Tanya Niemi (Chair), Patricia Shells (Co-Chair), and Herdy Christian Sr. (Commissioner).
With that in mind, the Board extends our sincere gratitude to the Saybrook Township Trustees—Bob Brobst, Dan Claypool, and Tom Pope—and the road crew for their support of these improvements. We thank Trustee Thomas Pope for his help in securing Empire Paving to repave a large portion of Lakefront Park. Mr. Pope has been an invaluable ally in this effort. STP hopes to complete the remainder of the lot in the spring.
The Board appreciates your understanding as these improvement projects progress. Thank you to the residents of Saybrook for making our community a wonderful place to live, work, and enjoy our parks—you make it all possible.
