Big Oak Nature Park is now open!

Center Road, just north of North Bend Road, Ashtabula, Ohio 44004

Enjoy and explore a fully-grown, nature, passive Park whose natural beauty has been preserved and undisturbed. Big Oak Nature Park is located on the east side of Route 45 just North of North Bend Road at 5210 Center Road, Ashtabula, Ohio.

The 30+ acre parcel of land was originally a small farm and contains wetlands, small streams, and forest with a tall tree canopy. This property was acquired by Saybrook Township Park as a gift from the Ashtabula Foundation over 10 years ago. Since its acquisition the Park Board has overseen a number of improvements to make it visitor friendly. Walking trails have been cut and covered with wood chips and provides a unique forest experience. The trails lead to a massive swamp white oak tree that is estimated to be between 100 – 150 years old. The tree measures over 18 feet in circumference and is a towering structure. It is believed to be among the oldest trees in Ohio. Walking back to the tree from the Park entrance takes about 10 – 15 minutes.

The Park is primitive and has purposely been kept in its natural state to protect the vegetation and animals that call it home. This property is rich in biological diversity and can complement educational programs in local schools and colleges as documented in a Biological Assessment and Management Plan commissioned in 2007.

Guests to the Park are reminded to use caution as terrain is rough and trails are primitive.

No hunting is permitted.
